Growth Arrest
Specific 6 (Gas6) is a vitamin K-dependent protein, the biological activity of
which is mediated by TAM receptors, a family of Tyrosine Kinases which includes
three different members.
TAM
receptors are also activated by Protein S, which shares structural
similarities with Gas6, but is mainly expressed in the liver and exerts an
anticoagulant effect in vivo; conversely Gas6 is more widely expressed and has
much more pleiotropic effects.
Gas6/TAM seems to
be particularly relevant in the regulation of immune system, raising interest
in its potential involvement in autoimmune diseases.
